SXSW 2027 Parties in Austin: Free Shows, Day by Day

Updated 6 min read

South by Southwest is Austin's annual conference and festival built around film, interactive media and music, running March 13th till 21st, 2027, with the dedicated music programme concentrated from March 15th through the 21st. The event floods the city with visitors every March, and for the free and unofficial side of that week, Austin's own venues matter as much as SXSW's own badge-holder showcases: Mood already lists 27 live music bookings across the city for the nine days, none of them carrying an official SXSW credential, all of them open to anyone who walks up or books ahead through the venue directly.

SXSW's own 2027 music programme - the official showcases, the badge schedule, the PanelPicker sessions - isn't public yet; the festival typically releases that in January and February. What follows is the early, honest picture: the independent bookings Mood already has on record for the week, city venue by city venue, updated as the official programme and the rest of the unofficial scene fill in closer to March.

Day by Day: What's Already Booked

Saturday, March 13th - the weekend before the badges show up

The week opens with a genuine cross-section of Austin on one night: contemporary worship artist Pat Barrett at LifeFamily Austin, and deadmau5 at United Heritage Hall.

Pepper's 20 Years of No Shame tour stop plays Central Machine Works the same night, and Sam's Town Point runs two sets back to back - Garrett T Capps followed later by Ramsay Midwood.

Sunday, March 14th

Twin Temple plays Mohawk Austin on Red River in the early evening, and Shane Fitzgerald closes out the night back at Sam's Town Point.

Monday, March 15th - the music conference badges start

This is the day SXSW's own music track officially opens, though the independent calendar doesn't wait for it: Sam's Town Point runs Steel Monday with Steve Palousek and the Little Elmore Reed Blues Band back to back.

Tuesday, March 16th - the busiest night on Mood's list so far

Six separate bookings land on the same night: the Mitch Watkins Trio at Elephant Room, Carolyn Wonderland & Shelley King at the Continental Club, Dan and Peggy Reeder at Sagebrush and Floyd Domino's All Stars at Sam's Town Point.

VNV Nation also plays two different rooms the same evening - The Far Out Lounge & Stage first, Radio/East an hour later.

Wednesday, March 17th - St. Patrick's Day lands in the middle of SXSW

St. Patrick's Day falls squarely inside music week this year, but Austin doesn't need a separate guide for it: the Summer Trio opens the night at Elephant Room, and Sam's Town Point runs two sets back to back, Libby & the Loveless then the Guthrie Girls. None of this is Irish music specifically - it's the honky-tonk and jazz calendar continuing as normal on a night the bars will be busier than usual anyway.

Thursday, March 18th

ZZ Top headlines United Heritage Hall, Seth James plays Sam's Town Point earlier the same evening, and Dance Therapy with Lavender Thug closes out the night at Rain.

Friday, March 19th - the heaviest and most varied night of the week

Four genuinely different rooms run at once: Armored Saint and Metal Church at Come and Take It Live, Curated by XOY's dance night at Oilcan Harry's, La Mafia at United Heritage Hall, and Level Up - The Ritual Tour at the Concourse Project.

Saturday, March 20th and Sunday, March 21st - the week closes out

Sam's Town Point carries the final weekend alone so far, with Ramsay Midwood returning Saturday night and Dom Francis closing the festival's final night on Sunday.

Where the Free Scene Concentrates

In Mood's data, 11 of the week's 27 listed shows - a little over four in ten - happen at a single venue, Sam's Town Point, the South Lamar honky-tonk that anchors Austin's roots and blues circuit most nights of the year, not just during SXSW. Red River's Mohawk Austin and East Austin's warehouse rooms (Central Machine Works, Sagebrush, the Concourse Project) show up too, but nowhere near that concentration. For anyone without a badge trying to plan one or two nights around the festival rather than the whole week, South Lamar is currently the highest-density option on Mood's own listings.

Mood also rates Pat Barrett's March 13th stop at LifeFamily Austin at a seating score of 1.0, the only booking in the week's data to max that dimension out - every seat accounted for in advance, a different shape of night than the walk-up club door that defines most of the rest of the list. On the other end of the scale, Curated by XOY's March 19 date at Oilcan Harry's is the only entry in the dataset to hit Mood's queerness ceiling of 1.0, in a week otherwise dominated by honky-tonk, metal and tejano.

Beyond the Badges

SXSW's own official showcases require a badge or a wristband, and most of those lineups aren't confirmed this far out. Everything listed above works differently: it's the normal Austin gig calendar, bookable or walk-up, running on its own schedule regardless of what the festival itself announces. That's also why none of it should be mistaken for an official SXSW event - Mood is not aware of any SXSW branding or affiliation on these listings, and this guide won't claim one. What it offers instead is an honest head start on a week when hotel prices spike and good tables disappear fast, built from venues that book this way every March with or without the festival in town.

Live music fans visiting for South by Southwest with no interest in a badge have another anchor point already live on Mood: the guide to Austin City Limits covers the city's other major annual music week, and the Austin monthly events guide tracks everything on the calendar outside festival season. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a SXSW badge to get into these shows?

No. Every event in this guide is a normal venue booking, open to the public through the venue's own door policy or ticketing, independent of SXSW's badge and wristband system. None of them require any SXSW credential.

When does SXSW's own official programme come out?

SXSW typically confirms its official music showcases, badge-holder schedule and PanelPicker sessions in January and February ahead of the March festival. This guide will update as that programme lands and as more independent bookings are added to Austin's calendar.

Where should I stay to be close to most of these venues?

South Lamar, near Sam's Town Point, currently carries the single densest cluster of listings in this guide. Red River (Mohawk Austin) and East Austin (Central Machine Works, Sagebrush, the Concourse Project) are the other two areas worth staying near if a single neighbourhood matters more than covering the whole city.

Is St. Patrick's Day a separate event during SXSW week?

Not in Austin's case. March 17 falls inside SXSW 2027's music week, and the night's bookings - Elephant Room's Summer Trio, Sam's Town Point's double bill - are the regular calendar continuing as normal, not Irish-themed programming.

Is the whole city busier than usual during this week?

Yes. SXSW brings a large temporary population of badge-holders, media and industry visitors into downtown and the surrounding venue strips, which pushes up hotel prices and wait times at the venues above well before the independent shows themselves start.
