one of them is queerness. We are turning that into the first cross-city
atlas of Europe's queer nightlife: seven cities, one question - where
does the queer night actually live? Compared only as shares of each
city's own catalogue, never as raw counts.

Density is not concentration
The single most useful cut. Across: how queer-dense a
city's catalogue is. Up: how much of that queer night
piles into one neighbourhood. A city can be queer-dense yet spread
(Amsterdam), or sparse yet hyper-concentrated (Athens) - opposite
corners of the same map.
Amsterdam is the densest queer night we have mapped; Athens
the most concentrated; London the most evenly spread. Density
and concentration are different questions - and no city answers both the
same way.

Beyond how many, what kind. Six coverage-safe cuts - each a
ratio or share within a city's own catalogue, so a fuller catalogue

Method & reuse
The census. Mood scores every catalogued venue on
twelve dimensions. A dedicated queer space is unmistakably
queer; a queer-friendly venue carries visible queer
programming without being defined by it.
The maps. Real administrative boundaries -
Amsterdam's stadsdelen, Athens's Attica municipalities, and boroughs,
arrondissements, Bezirke, districtes and sectors for the rest. Each
profiled venue is placed into its neighbourhood by coordinates; the
shade is the count of dedicated queer spaces inside.
Fair comparison. Cities are compared only as shares
of their own catalogue. We never rank cities by raw venue counts,
because deeper coverage in one city would masquerade as a bigger
scene. Paris is mapped by its twenty arrondissements; venues in the
banlieue fall outside them and are not counted.
